Which Station Serves Central Florence?

Firenze Santa Maria Novella, often shortened to Firenze SMN, is a terminus station in central Florence and a focal point of the city’s public-transport system. If you’re staying at Emerald Palace, the station is about an eight-minute walk away.

The current station was designed by the Gruppo Toscano, led by Giovanni Michelucci, following a competition announced in 1932. It was inaugurated in 1935. The station’s design and central role make it a useful starting point for understanding how to get around Florence.

Finding Your Way Around Santa Maria Novella

Firenze SMN has 19 passenger tracks, arranged across three areas. Tracks 5–16 are in the main building; tracks 1A, 1, 2, 3 and 4 are in the west wing; tracks 17 and 18 are at the east end. Check the departure information at the station for your train’s platform, and allow time to get to the relevant section.

Station services include ticket offices, luggage storage, a pharmacy, information and assistance, tourist information, restrooms and shopping. The station also has parking, Railway Police and Sala Blu assistance. If you’re planning a visit to the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, check its visitor information separately for details about visiting.

Trains, Tickets and Connections

You can buy regional train tickets through ticket offices, self-service machines, and Trenitalia’s website and app. The validation rules depend on the ticket type, so check yours before boarding.

  • Validate a regional paper ticket at the station where your journey begins, before the train departs. Once validated, it is non-transferable and the journey must be completed within four hours, subject to exceptions under specific regional fares.
  • A Digital Regional Ticket is automatically validated at the scheduled departure time of the chosen train. An Electronic Regional Ticket does not require validation.

For Florence public transport, an Urbano capoluogo ticket is valid for 90 minutes from validation or activation. It covers Florence urban buses and trams, as well as regional trains at Firenze SMN and other listed Florence-area stations.

Validate or activate a paper or digital bus ticket when you first board. If a validator is out of service, write the date and time on the ticket and tell the driver immediately.

Local Buses and Tram Connections

Local Buses and Tram Connections

Bus and tram stops are among the station’s integrated local-mobility connections. Firenze SMN is also an interchange for numerous bus and taxi routes, though individual city-bus route numbers and stop locations aren’t specified here. Follow station wayfinding to locate the stop for your connection, and confirm your route before setting off.

If you’re planning a stop at the Central Market, check its hours and visitor details before making it part of your plans.

Accessibility and Practical Arrival Notes

RFI identifies Firenze SMN as a station with assistance for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility. Facilities include an accessible restroom, reserved parking spaces, and audible and visual passenger-information systems.

Assistance for services between 7:45 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. can be requested in person at RFI Sala Blu or by telephone up to one hour before the train’s departure or arrival. RFI provides information about arrangements for other times.

The station’s opening and closing times follow the day’s first and last train departures and arrivals; there isn’t one fixed daily schedule on the station page. For current station and ticket details, check the official site before you go, including RFI, Trenitalia and Autolinee Toscane for the service you plan to use.
